"We argue that the 'ciprofloxacin gamble' is high risk, has already failed, and alternative options must be sought."
Prophylactic ciprofloxacin for prostate biopsy: a losing bet?

"Recently the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated its warnings about the use of this class of drugs because of concerns about tendonitis, tendon rupture, and peripheral neuropathy, which can occur even after a single dose. It may occur immediately or sometime in the future, and it can become permanent. They are advising that when alternatives exist, that they be selected in place of a fluoroquinolone because the harms outweigh the benefits...
Given that there are safe alternatives available, one could make a strong argument against the use of a fluoroquinolone going forward. I think that discussion needs to occur, and in the best interest of both patient care and protecting doctors, they should make sure that your informed consent does contain information about the risk of a fluoroquinolone, if that is the drug of choice for prophylaxis. For now, I think that fluoroquinolone use in prophylactic antibiotics prior to biopsy does not seem to make sense as the first line of treatment."

"To date no group was able to demonstrate bacteria in bone of the paranasal sinuses, and whether bacteria induce bony remodeling because of associated inflammation or whether they truly infect bone is unknown."
